Glozhene Monastery, which bears the name of Saint George the Victorious, rises on the picturesque wooded northern slopes of the central part of the Balkan Range. It lies at a distance of some 110 km from Sofia along the motorway. The legend tells that the monastery was founded in the 13th century, with the special blessing of King Ivan Assen II.
