KaloferKalofer is situated in the foot of Kalofer mountain which is part of the Stara Planina mountains, in southern Bulgaria.

It is located 18 km from the city of Karlovo and 65 km from the town of Plovdiv.

According to the legend the city was founded by Kalofer voivode [leader of a small rebel detachment].

During the 18th century the village turns into a craftsmen’s centre. The cloaks and woolen braids manufactured here were popular all around.

During the Ottoman domination the city has been burnt down twice. During the War for liberation lots of houses and craftsman shops have been destroyed.

Nowadays the city is small, attractive and well-arranged. This is the starting point for the Central Balkan National Park, Botev peak and the highest Bulgarian waterfall called Raiskoto praskalo (its name means Paradise Splash). Read more
