The city of Provadiya is located in the eastern part of Bulgaria on both banks of the Provadiya river, about 50 km from Varna.
The contemporary city is inheritor of a village situated there from ancient times as well as a medieval city called Ovech.
For certain time the city receives the Greek name Provat (where the current name comes from), and later an Arabian researcher calls it Bufanto. During the Middle Ages the city has been an important bishop centre.
