SmolyanThe town of Smolyan is the most important place in the Central Rhodopes.

Smolyan  is 90 km from Plovdiv.

It borders the Republic of Greece to the south, the the towns of Roudozem, Madan and Banite to the east, Pamporovo, Laki and Chepelare to the north and Devin to the west.

Smolyan charms with a fascinating combination of old and new architecture. The best of typical folk houses, from the time of Bulgarian national revival are to be found in the Rhodopes.

An excellent example is Pangalova’s house. Other notable buildings include the palace of Ali Bey in the Raikovo quarter, whose oldest part was constructed in 1780. The biggest Planetarium with public observatory in Bulgaria is built in Smolyan.
