It is 31 km from the town of Kyustendil and about 50 km from Sofia.
During the Middle Ages this region was flourishing.
After the Ottoman conquest the city is destroyed
After the Liberation from Ottoman domination the village is called Belovo. In 1925 it is renamed Zemen after the Zemlangrad fortress, and in 1974 it is declared a city. Nowadays this is a small and attractive city with all public services.
